Training and assessment strategy (TAS): This area is the main component of RTO’s academic system. The RTO tends to fail this by having an unclear delivery mode, volume of earning, assessment methods, and/or other factors. This also includes additional requirements for different student cohorts such as the requirement of 20 contact hours for international students. The RTO must ensure that its training and assessment strategy aligns with the training products’ requirements as well as regulatory
standards.
Resourcing: In this area, the RTO normally fails to meet the requirements due to insufficient resources to support number of students. This also includes the number of trainers and assessors. To fix this, the RTO must have a system in place to frequently check its resources such as equipment, facilities, human resources, and others. This will allow the RTO to support the students’ successful study journey.
Record keeping: The RTO sometimes fails to keep and maintain comprehensive and accurate records of student’s progress, assessments, and outcomes. If the RTO could not provide requested by the ASQA auditors, it could lead to non-compliance from failing to cooperate with ASQA performance assessment activities. To solve this problem, the RTO must ensure to keep record, it is suggested to keep both physical and virtual ways. The relevant staff members must be assigned to maintain and update the record regularly.
Trainers and assessors: RTO sometimes employs the trainers and/or assessors who do not hold credentials as required from the regulatory standards. This also includes those who do not maintain
their industry currency or fail to meet vocational competencies. In order to solve this issue, the RTO must have a proper recruitment process which can be done by ensuring the potential trainers/assessors are qualified. Moreover, a specific document should be prepared for mapping units’ requirements with
trainers/assessors’ existing knowledge, skills, and academic background.
Learning and assessment resources: The learning and assessment resources used by RTOs do not cover all requirements of the units of competency. This will not allow students to appropriately demonstrate required knowledge and skills. To fix this, the RTO is suggested to cross check the units’ requirements when preparing the resources (e.g., performance criteria, performance evidence, knowledge evidence, and others). Additionally, the RTO can prepare a mapping document to ensure each component is covered, reflected, and/or mentioned in the learning and assessment resources.
